USDA Forest Service seeks qualified applicants for the Apprenticeship position of: pathways Intern - Student Trainee
The USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW) plans to advertise a Pathways Internship Program Student Trainee position (GS-0499-03). This notification is being circulated to inform prospective student applicants of this upcoming opportunity and determine interest in the position.
The Student Trainee will be a member of a collaborative research project within the Conservation of Biological Diversity Program of PSW, and will coordinate with staff and scientists within PSW and outside organizations to accomplish the objectives of an externally funded research grant from the Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP). The research of this project will develop hybrid ecosystems that enhance carbon storage, native biodiversity, and human mobility in lowland Hawaiian forests.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent serves as Student Intern providing support to the projects research program where the duties are performed as part of required on the job training in conjunction with scholastic training at an accredited education institution as it pertains to various permanent Forest Service positions in natural resource related fields. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion related to conservation work requiring walking on rough terrain and the duration of the activity contributes to the arduous nature of the job. The work is performed in a forest environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, and covered in think and tangled vegetation.
The position will be located at the Pacific Southwest Research Station Hilo office at the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry at 60 Nowelo St. Hilo, Hawaii 96720.
